Tata Row Raises Questions Over Political

          Interference in Indian Corporate Affairs

Finance minister mounts a strong defence of the government, arguing that the controversy

was being used to undermine confidence in Indian industry

Tof Tata Sons has evolved from an internal
        corporate-governance controversy into a political
confrontation, raising questions about the relation-
ship between the Indian government and the coun-
try’s biggest business groups. While Congress leader
Rahul Gandhi has accused the BJP-led government
of treating Indian businesses as its “plaything”, Fi-
nance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has rejected
the charge, accusing the Opposition of politicising
        commercial and legal matters.
At the heart of the controversy is a challenge
by Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata to the validity of
        the board resolution approving Chandrasekaran’s
reappointment. But the exchange between Gandhi
and Sitharaman has widened the debate beyond the
Tata Group, bringing into focus the larger question
of whether Indian corporations can take indepen-
dent decisions without political pressure or the per-
        ception of government interference.
